Sears Teams up with the White Sox — Sears and the White Sox have struck a deal as an official partnership promoting Sears Blue Lawn & Garden Crew. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Sears wanted to partner with the White Sox because of its famous groundskeeper, Roger Bossard, and the partnership gives Sears a major outlet for promoting one of its top lawn and garden brands: Craftsman. Mother's Day Sales Expected To Rise — The beginning of May is set to be a good time for retailers, according to a report from the National Retail Federation. Consumers are expected to spend $14.6 billion on gifts for Mother’s Day. Read more »

Home Depot Gives $3.7 Million to CharityATLANTA — The Home Depot Foundation gave $3.7 million to several nonprofit organizations, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The money supported building homes for low- to moderate-income families and playgrounds for children. The money will be used to build 1,686 affordable homes, 31 playgrounds and landscape 48 acres in urban areas. Read more »

Home Remodeling Gets a Boost for the First Time in Four Years — Home improvement centers are seeing signs of life as homeowners start to tackle home remodeling projects that were put off due to the lethargic economy. Read more »

Housing Starts Rose 1.6 Percent in March — The Commerce Department announced that housing starts increased 1.6 percent in March, with permits for new housing units jumping 7.5 percent. Read more »

Gap Between Mortgage and Rent Payments Lowest in 20 Years — According to a national study by Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services, low interest rates and years of declining home prices have led to the narrowest payment gap between owning and renting a home in 20 years, which in some markets, can be less than $100. Foreclosure Rates See Biggest Jump in 5 Years — Foreclosure rates jumped 35 percent in the first quarter over last year, according to RealtyTrac, Inc. which tracks statistics on homeownership. Homes facing foreclosure also increased 16 percent in the same period. Read more »

Lowe’s Names Janet M. Saura to Senior Vice President

Lowe’s announced Janet M. Saura will be promoted to senior vice president and deputy general counsel. Saura has been with Lowe’s since 2006 and served in the legal department focusing on daily counsel, labor relations and employee compliance. Her new role will consist of employee relations counseling, government transactions and compliance and certain litigation matters.

Saura obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science from Oakland University and a juris doctorate from the University of Detroit.
